Chinese TV’s golden opportunity

August 24, 2010

For the first time, an award event — the Golden Awards — is being held to recognise local Chinese TV productions and talent, writes BIBI NURSHUHADA RAMLI

IF you watch a good Chinese drama or programme on TV, chances are you would think it’s produced either in Hong Kong, Singapore or Taiwan — when it’s actually locally-made. In truth, we are not far behind from our counterparts — witness the many popular locally-produced Chinese dramas aired over the years.

However, Malaysia has yet to have an award event that celebrates the works of local Chinese talents. The inaugural Golden Awards by ntv7 on Sept 25, the first of its kind here, is about to change all that.

Nominees will be picked by judges comprising experts in the Asian Chinese entertainment industry such as Taiwan and Singapore.

The Drama category received 142 entries and all shortlisted nominations for Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Newcomer will automatically be included in the Viewers’ Choice category. Meanwhile, the Non-Drama category drew 75 entries.

The Golden Awards is open only to local Chinese (including, but not limited to, Mandarin and Cantonese) TV programmes produced by Malaysian television broadcasters or registered production companies. Only those programmes that have been broadcast for the first time between Oct 1, 2007, and Sept 30, 2009, are eligible. Meanwhile, individual award nominees must be Malaysian citizens or permanent Malaysian residents.

In the Drama category, the finalists for Best Drama are Age Of Glory, Goodnight DJ, Love 18, Romantic Delicacies and The Iron Lady. Melvin Sia, Wee Kheng Ming, Steve Yap, Zeng Hong Hui and Zzen Zhang are the nominees for Best Actor while for Best Actress, the nominees are Aenie Wong, Apple Hong, Debbie Goh, Jesseca Liu and Yeo Yann Yann.
